The Eagle's Nest
For sloping hillside locations, we propose a model raised above the sloping terrain, supported on columns so that the natural slope can continue undisturbed. The structural loads will be carried by columns, not walls.
This will free the internal walls to be flexible elements, located according to the tastes and needs of each owner. The structural support system will be concrete piloti at the ground plane, supporting exposed wood columns and beams, wood floors and ceilings.
The design will evoke the image of a sophisticated holiday cabin in the woods, with the main building materials as wood and protected operable glass shaded by louvered overhangs. Dramatic double height spaces and balconies complement the dramatic setting.
The Courtyard House
The courtyard, centered on a specimen tropical tree, sheltered under the spreading canopy, will extend the living space of the house and help create outdoor rooms for living.
The courtyards also create a temperature differential which causes updraft, aiding natural ventilation by moving air through the house using the Venturi-Cottrell effect.
The Pavillion
The Pavilions engage the outdoors providing the maximum interaction with nature. Each pavilion serves a distinct function. Clusters of pavilions create an intriguing complex, inter-weaving indoor and outdoor rooms.
The small footprint of each pavilion minimizes re-grading of the hillside, as the pavilions conform to the shape of the contour, stepping with the slope.
Contextually correct design elements - natural ventilation, compact footprint and shady overhangs - here accented with passive energy systems and the latest technological advances, make this a compelling design.
